Water Becomes Mountain, Mountain Becomes Water
The Skyscape series was conceived while I was looking through an airplane window at the sea of clouds stretching below. The view outside the window evoked East Asian shanshui painting as well as the mountain landscapes of Romanticism. I became fascinated by the idea that the soft, transient vapor of clouds could appear as rugged mountain ranges when viewed through the conventions of landscape painting.
Skyscape reconstructs atmospheric phenomena as geological structures. By translating fluid clouds into solid terrain through graphite, the work explores human visual perception. It questions how we categorize and perceive the physical world, ultimately dissolving the distinctions between air and earth, form and formlessness.
