This series of abstract paintings developed from the graphite drawing series Skyscape.
The central motif is flowing water—an inherently formless and ever-changing presence. In contrast to the orthogonal grids employed by Postwar Modernism to order space and assert flatness, this work reinterprets stylized traditional Japanese water patterns (ryusui-mon, seigaiha, kanzemizu) as a “distorted grid”—a dynamic, organic structure.
Here, the fluid motif of water is abstracted onto the picture plane as a distorted grid, establishing a solid structure. Working in tandem with the grid, intersecting chromatic layers generate a visceral dynamism—a chaos that expands the structure from within.
