Streams – Distorted Grid
This series of abstract paintings developed from the graphite drawing series Skyscape, carrying forward its engagement with amorphous, fluid motifs and extending the exploration of how they can be transformed into pictorial forms.
Centered on the motif of flowing water—an inherently formless and ever-changing presence—the series takes inspiration from the orthogonal grid associated with postwar modernist abstraction. Drawing on traditional Japanese water motifs (ryusui-mon, seigaiha, kanzemizu), it constructs a “distorted grid” from their stylized forms—a structure that retains the formlessness of flowing water.
The fluid motif of water is abstracted on the picture plane into a distorted grid, establishing a solid structure. Working in tandem with this framework, intersecting chromatic layers generate a visceral dynamism—a chaos that expands the structure from within.
